UAM Mission

UAM is a school that is focused on bringing out the best in all students’ thinking so that they are able to achieve at high levels.

 

UAM graduates are able to respond to the world by making choices that maximize positive outcomes for themselves and others.

 

UAM is focused on developing students' abilities to think critically, not just acquiring more knowledge.  As a result, our students are able to respond productively in novel situations.  

 

UAM students are able to: solve problems; access, analyze and evaluate information and messages from a range of media; and express their thinking verbally and in writing.

 

As a result, UAM students are literate media consumers and innovative content creators that are prepared to thrive in college, career and life and to be proactive members of their communities.

UAM Vision

Instruction

To accomplish our mission UAM provides all students with access to challenging courses, infuses media to engage students, and makes learning relevant to them.  Across the curriculum, students are encouraged to challenge assumptions, make connections to their world, and engage in critical conversations on provoking topics. In all subject areas students: 

  • Read texts to infer, interpret, and draw conclusions

  • Analyze and evaluate complex messages from a range of media

  • Support arguments with evidence 

  • Resolve conflicting views encountered in source documents

  • Solve complex problems and answer complex questions with no obvious answers

Social Emotional Learning

 

  • Social Awareness so that advisors are able to take the perspective of their advisees in order to be empathetic and identify family, school and community resources and supports

  • Self-Awareness so that advisors understand their strengths and limitations working with students

  • Self-Management so that advisor is able to regulate emotions, thoughts, and behaviors so that your emotions don’t cloud your work with students

  • Develop Relationships so that the advisor is able to develop relationships with students with a range of personalities as well as with families.

  • Responsible Decision-Making so that advisors are able to model and demonstrate the process for making constructive and respectful choices about personal behavior and social interactions.
